The collection consists chiefly of letters and a postcard to Will Orton Tewson concerning a review of Paul de Kruif's "Microbe hunters." Keen finds the style too senational and melodramatic, comments that he has met Joseph Meister, the first person to be inoculated against rabies by Louis Pasteur and notes that de Kruif does not convey Pasteur's "horrible anziety" at the time.

De Kruif received a B.S. degree in 1912 from the University of Michigan. As a Rockefeller fellow, he became a researcher in bacteriology at Michigan. Narrowing his specialty to microbiology, he earned a Ph. D. in 1916.
